Youth:  Who are they?
  • Congregation members and visitors
  • Neighbors
  • Area students
  • 6th grade to 12th grade*
  • musicians, athletes, bookworms, dancers, fishermen, loners, joiners, jr high, sr high, home schooled, mature, immature, etc.

Good News!
  • All youth need the good news and the opportunity to live it!  However, youth learn at different speeds and in different ways

Youth group vs. youth ministry
  • Youth group:  the regulars who make up a church’s UMYF, Bible study, or Sunday school class(es).  [It has its own DNA, so be careful how you grow.]


  • Youth ministry:  living and sharing the gospel with any and all youth*

Your Guiding Principle for Youth Ministry:
The 2 Greatest Commandments
Matthew 22:37-39
  • Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength


  • Love your Neighbor as yourself.


  • On these two commandments, hang all the law and all the prophets.

Youth Ministry Objectives*

  • Respect and care for others
  • Respect and care for self
  • Growing relationship with God through Jesus Christ
  • Mission and outreach to others
  • Understanding the nature of the church
  • Abundant life in Christ:  joy and fulfillment, play; hanging out together.

Chronos vs. Kairos

  • Structured time is all accounted for
  • Unstructured time (living in the moment and losing track of time)

We structure youth ministry in chronos  time in the hopes that kairos  time will happen!

District Youth Ministry Resources
  • DCYM*: District Council on Youth Ministry
    • Youth reps from each church, district youth officers, and
    • church youth leaders plan district youth events
    • (usually on bimonthly basis).
  • Monthly District Youth Leader dinners (for adults)


  • Quarterly District Worship/Fellowship at host churches


  • Periodic events hosted by your fellow youth groups (aka sub-district events) (send youth event email announcements to Donna Moody via southeastdistrict@sbcglobal.net
